PSS retrofills power transformers using fluid options selected for the specific transformer, environment and operating requirements. The process involves draining the existing fluid and replacing it with the same or another suitable dielectric fluid.
Project Evaluation
PSS evaluates oil quality, flash point and other potential issues, then considers weather, load, environment, location and equipment design when developing a fluid-replacement plan.
Fluid Options
Depending on the application, replacement options may include mineral oil, natural ester or synthetic dielectric fluids. For smaller mineral-oil-filled transformers, fluid replacement can sometimes be more economical than full oil processing. On larger transformers, alternate fluids may provide operational or risk-management benefits depending on the application.
PCB-Related Retrofill Considerations
Replacing PCB-based fluids in existing transformers can improve reliability, reduce environmental hazards and increase fire safety in appropriate applications. The current PSS guidance notes that attempting this process on transformers filled with pure PCB fluid is typically not cost effective; disposal and replacement may be the better path for those units.
