TRANSFORMER RETROFILL

Transformer Oil Replacement

PSS retrofills power transformers with a variety of fluids based on the specific application and individual needs of the customer. This process involves draining the transformer and replacing the fluid with the same or other type of dielectric fluid.  We evaluate your oil for flash point, quality and other potential issues, and recommend various fluid options to correct any problems.

For small, mineral oil filled transformers it is often less costly to retrofill or change the oil rather than undergo transformer oil processing. For larger substation transformers, replacing the mineral oil with a natural ester or synthetic fluids can offer saving on insurance costs.

Replacing PCB-based fluids in existing transformers can help to improve the life and reliability of the transformer, reduce environmental hazards and increase fire safety.  However, it is typically not cost effective to attempt this process on transformers filled with pure PCB fluid.  Because of this, we would recommend disposal and replacement for these types of units.

Each project has unique factors that must be considered when developing an action plan. Weather, load, environment, location, and equipment design all must be taken into account. Our engineering staff has extensive experience and expertise in finding the right solution for all your transformer fluid replacement needs.

Retrofilling—or replacing PCB-based fluids in existing transformers—can help to improve the life and reliability of the transformer, reduce environmental hazards and increase fire safety.
